This Friday, we were kidless thanks to my parents, who took Eden so we could get ready for her 3rd (3RD?!?!?) birthday party.  We debated quite a few places but settled on Fat Fish Blue, which is located in Perrysburg at Levis Commons.  We’ve been there a few times before, and have liked the food.  I didn’t take very many pictures this week, because I was basking in the ability to have an unhurried conversation and I almost forgot.

Atmosphere/Overall Appearance:

Fat Fish Blue is a very cool looking place.  It’s set up to kind of mimic New Orleans which means that there lots of darker colors, neon lights, etc.  It’s fairly large with a nice bar and stage where they have live music on weekends.  Each place setting also has beads, so that’s cool…  built in souvenir.  Fat Fish Blue is also the home of the Funny Bone Comedy Club, so the entrance for that is actually in the restaurant itself.  It’s pretty quiet considering how big it is, and, depending on where you sit, it can either feel very intimate or like a great place to have a big group.

The Food:

The menu is a twist on Creole, so there are things like jambalaya, gumbo, grits and po boys.   There is quite a bit of seafood on the menu as well.  Josh got the jambalaya, and I got the southern fried chicken with pepper gravy.  The jambalaya had chicken and andouille sausage in it, and I have a weakness for andouille. I stole a bite of his dinner, and it was very good.  It had a lot of depth to the flavor and a lot of interesting undertones.  The fried chicken was great!  It had a cornmeal breading on it which was a little different than what you normally see on fried chicken, but it was tasty.  The white pepper gravy was awesome, and I wanted more!  It was also served with mashed potatoes and broccoli, which were fine, but nothing out the of ordinary.  The jalapeño cornbread, though, was very unique and good.  It actually has pieces of corn and jalapeño  running through it, and it looked like it might have been done in a cast iron pan from the way it was served.  We were both pretty happy with our meals.

Kid Friendliness:

As I mentioned above, we were kid-free for this meal, which meant we got to eat our food hot – huzzah!  However, there was a family seated not too far away from us and they seemed to be happy with their experience.  I can tell you they have high chairs and boosters.  I didn’t think to ask for a kids menu, which I wish I would have done.  One thing I will say is that I suspect that as the night goes on, Fat Fish Blue becomes more of an adult oriented establishment.  They have a live band that starts around 8, I think, and since it also serves as the home of a comedy club, the later it gets, you see fewer families and more couples and groups.  I don’t want to give the impression that FFB wouldn’t want your children there because I saw no indication of that, just simply that common sense dictates that if you’re bringing your kids, get there a little earlier.

Wait Staff/Service:

Our waitress was very nice and took good care of us.  I suspect that she was fairly new and a little nervous, but that didn’t detract from the service she gave us at all.  Our drinks and refills were prompt, the food arrived very quickly, she stopped back to check on us, but didn’t hover, and brought our check and receipts quickly. You can’t ask for more than that!

Overall Impressions:

I really liked the atmosphere of FFB.   For me and Josh it was a great place to go for a dinner out where you feel like you’re getting away, but it’s not overly fancy.  I didn’t feel out of place in my jeans and sweatshirt where I think that in some of the other places we considered I would have.  The food is good and there is a wide variety of options and price points.  The two of us got out the door for around $30, which I think is pretty decent of that kind of restaurant.  If you’ve never been there before, you should really go check it out!
